BEACON 2025: A Landmark Gathering for Astrobiology in Europe
The European Science Foundation (ESF) is proud to celebrate the success of BEACON 2025, the second Biennial European Astrobiology Conference, which took place from 1–5 July 2025 at the Harpa Conference Centre in Reykjavík, Iceland.
BEACON25
Organised by the European Astrobiology Institute (EAI), for which ESF serves as Secretariat, BEACON 2025 brought together over 300 scientists, students, and professionals from across Europe and beyond. The event provided a vibrant platform for showcasing cutting-edge research, building interdisciplinary connections, and exploring the future of astrobiology.
The conference covered a wide spectrum of themes, including planetary system formation, biosignature detection, the chemical origins of life, and planetary habitability. In addition to a strong scientific programme, BEACON 2025 featured outreach activities for the public, early-career researcher support, and excursions to Iceland’s unique natural landscapes. Keynote speakers from leading institutions around the world contributed to what was widely regarded as an inspiring and forward-looking event.
A Strong Partnership
Since EAI’s founding in 2019, ESF has been a close and active partner, providing not only Secretariat services but also year-round strategic and communications support. Our collaboration ensures that EAI remains a strong, visible, and coordinated voice in the global astrobiology landscape.
Looking ahead, the next major milestone for the EAI community will be the 2026 General Assembly, where members will convene to shape the institute’s future priorities and initiatives. ESF remains committed to supporting the growth and impact of EAI in the years to come.
