The ACCTING project comes to an end
Launched in February 2022, the ACCTING project set out to explore how major policy initiatives like the European Green Deal - designed to drive environmental sustainability and climate neutrality - affect individuals and communities who are often marginalised or vulnerable from a gender+ intersectional perspective.
Our key objectives were to:
- Analyse how Green Deal policies influence individual and collective behaviours
- Co-create and implement inclusive solutions with stakeholders and policymakers
- Empower policymakers to anticipate and mitigate the unequal impacts of climate policies
Though ACCTING has officially concluded, its outputs offer valuable tools and insights for researchers, civil society, NGOs, businesses, and policymakers working toward a just and inclusive green transition.
Research insights
Over two research cycles ACCTING has...
- Mapped and analysed over 700 grassroots and bottom-up initiatives across 34 countries, identifying 150+ inspiring practices from individuals and organisations.
- Conducted 900 interviews, 40 experimental studies, and assessed 90 case studies and surveys across 8 thematic research lines. This has resulted in eight reseach line reports and a qualitative comparative analysis report highlighting how intersecting vulnerabilities influence behavioural change.
- Two future research agendas were developed, informed by knowledge gaps and co-created concepts from ACCTING's open studios.
"The lessons we have gathered through ACCTING show us that when we center justice, when we listen to those too often unheard, when we collectively co-create communities of common, we build stronger, better solutions for all."
Sofia Strid, ACCTING Scientific Coordinator.
Policy recommendations
- ACCTING has produced 13 factsheets and 3 policy briefs offering operational guidance to improve Green Deal policy design and implementation.
- The project's final policy brief coordinated by ESF, concludes that real behaviour change and sustainability require:
- Strengthened collaboration between policymakers and civil society
- Emphasis on community-based approaches
- Recognition of systemic inequalities and power dynamics
- Alignment of grassroots initiatives with institutional support
A series of webinars is available on demand, spotlighting key recommendations and stakeholder engagement.
Pilot Actions
- ACCTING funded 10 innovative pilot projects addressing inequalities within different Green Deal thematic areas.
