A publication by the European Space Sciences Committee (ESSC) and the result of a collaborative effort led by the ESSC Earth Sciences Panel, working with the European Science Foundation (ESF), the European Space Agency (ESA) and professional graphic designers, explores how Earth observation satellites have transformed our understanding of the planet whilst addressing some of the greatest challenges of our time.
The document draws on examples from the atmosphere, polar regions, oceans, and land to explain - in straightforward terms - the groundbreaking scientific discoveries enabled by EO satellites. Central to this effort was the “translation” of complex scientific publications into accessible language, complemented by impactful visuals created through close collaboration between scientists and professional graphic designers. The twelve examples presented offer merely a glimpse of the impact that EO satellites deliver. They were crafted to showcase the range of scientific discovery, the significance of the issues addressed, the originality of the findings, and their enduring contribution to knowledge.
The process developed for this document offers a template for future promotion of space-based scientific excellence. The resulting document serves multiple audiences: not only high-level decision-makers, but also the general public and students, who can grasp complex Earth science issues through clear, straightforward storytelling. Adopting this approach more broadly is not merely a matter of public relations; it is a strategic imperative.
