Launch of the ALMASI project
ESF is proud to announce the launch of ALMASI (Aligning and Mutualising Nonprofit Open Access Publishing Services Internationally), a new project that it will be coordinating, funded by the European Union’s Horizon Europe programme.
Strengthening Nonprofit Open Access Publishing
ALMASI brings together 16 partners from Africa, Latin America, and Europe to foster a nonprofit, high-quality, and sustainable scholarly publishing ecosystem rooted in equity, accessibility, and multilingualism.
The project addresses the urgent need to support and strengthen Diamond Open Access (OA), a model of publishing that is free for both authors and readers. The project will focus on aligning and improving nonprofit OA publishing infrastructures across three continents to ensure long-term sustainability and inclusivity in scholarly communication.
The name ALMASI means "diamond" in Swahili, reflecting the project's commitment to equitable and sustainable Diamond Open Access publishing.
Running until 2027, the ALMASI project aims to create a truly inclusive and robust ecosystem where scholarly communities can retain control over the publishing process and ensure accessibility without financial barriers. By enabling infrastructure alignment and community collaboration, the project will contribute to transforming the global publishing landscape.
