More about the Network
The Network brings together scientists interested in the transitions of young people as they progress towards adulthood. The main focus is on the transition from education to the labour market, but in the context of other transitions, for example to new family statuses or to independent households.
The long-term goal of the Network is to advance theoretical understanding of transitions in youth, and especially of the relationships between education/ training and the labour market, through the comparative analysis of regular and longitudinal surveys of transitions. This very ambitious goal cannot be fully achieved within the time span, or with the resources, of the ESF Network. The principal activity of the ESF Network has been to hold three annual workshops, each with a specific theme which, it is envisaged, will contribute to the long-term goal of the Network. Although the number of places at each workshop was limited, but participation has been made as "open" as possible by publishing a call for papers. The papers which were presented at the first two workshops are made available free of charge from the ESF as part of a series of working papers. The papers from the third workshop will be published by CEREQ (Marseille, F).
Information on the Network’s activities is given in the regular issues of its Newsletter (Issue 1: January 1994; Issue 2: June 1994; Issue 3: December 1994; Issue 4: July 1995; Issue 5: December 1995; Issue 6: June 1996; Issue 7: December 1996), which offers a means of communication among the many European researchers studying transitions in youth. Contributions with information about research in progress, surveys and datasets, forthcoming conferences and workshops, new publications, in English or French, would be welcome and should be sent to the Chairman of the Network, David Raffe. Requests to be added to the mailing list of the Network should be sent to the Secretary of the Network, Jordi Planas.
