More about the programme

The main purpose of this research programme is to promote the use of experimental facilities to study the mitigation of vibration in civil engineering structures by means of innovative semi-active control technologies.

The objectives are:

  • to perform analytical and experimental validation tests on large structures to verify the capability of the control systems to mitigate the effects of induced vibrations: this will be pursued at JRC (Joint Research Centre) where large experimental facilities are available;
  • to compare the behaviour of different control algorithms and devices on small scale prototype: this will be pursued at the university of Pavia, where a medium scale shaking table is available;
  • to investigate emerging technology subjects in innovative structural systems like smart materials;
  • to study robustness and reliability of the hardware devices.

The programme gathers experts from two main areas: buildings and bridges. They are the two structural systems on which the programme is focused. However, devices and controllers to be incorporated in such structural systems represent the core of the research activity.

Pre-doctoral researchers will be oriented to a narrow spectrum of activity, asking them in depth investigation on the innovation principles. Post-doctoral researchers will have the opportunity to gain experience over a wide spectrum ranging from the conceiving of the innovation, to the realisation of the prototype and to its inclusion in an actual design, with its cost-benefit implications. The resulting teams will thrive on their differences and practice cross-fertilisation of scientific approaches.
