Integrated Approaches for Functional Genomics

More about the Programme

The programme which brings together a wide range of functional genomics experts and covers experimental and in silico domains. There will be many benefits from an integrated approach between the experimental technologies and informatics tools, which are highly complementary in nature. Also the combination of genome sequencing projects and functional analysis is producing a flow of data which puts a particular focus on the biological relationships between sequences; hence, the need for models, methods and tools to manipulate sequence networks or clusters is becoming ever more important. In this programme, the aims are therefore to combine the individual experimental ‘wet’ technologies with the in silico methods which can be applied to them, and to establish an appropriate infrastructure for the optimisation of the exploration and exploitation of the enormous amount of information available.

A set of ‘vertical’ and ‘horizontal’ scientific areas have been identified, which will be used to structure the co-operation at the European level. Vertical areas correspond to specific technological or scientific fields, while horizontal areas correspond to requirements that are common to several vertical areas. These areas are:

Vertical areas:

  • Analysis of phenotypic changes resulting from mutagenesis and gene disruption
  • DNA arrays and chips in expression profiling and mutation detection
  • Proteomics: protein identification, characterisation, expression and interactions
  • Structural genomics: protein structure determination, classification, modelling and docking
  • In silico methods for the description of cellular systems by data and literature mining, predictions and simulations

Horizontal areas:

  • Standardisation, benchmarking and comparison of different experimental systems
  • Data management: databases, interfaces and ontologies
  • Combination and integration of functional genomics data to derive new biological knowledge
