Our mission

We enable Open Science, driving advancement of accessible and collaborative research.

ESF facilitates adoption of open science principles, enabling all stakeholders to be part of scientific progress, opening access to knowledge and data, and ensuring a collaborative approach to research and innovation. We operate in two core areas: we coordinate and strengthen projects funded by the European Commission, as well as host and support networks of scientific- and funding organisations.

Our objectives align with the EU’s open science policy and its Responsible Research and Innovation (RRI) principles. Indeed, we support initiatives such as capacity building, citizen science, open peer reviews, open citations, open laboratories, FAIR data, open communication, and open access. In doing so, our committed team facilitates diverse collaborations across and beyond the research community, involving researchers, policymakers, industries and the public.
