Through its dedicated and expert team members, ESF covers all scientific disciplines.
For decades, ESF has been conducting research assessment across a wide range of projects and applications, helping organisations identify and fund the most promising research. We deliver high-quality, independent evaluations in collaboration with our Community of Experts, which gathers more than 10,000 reviewers covering all scientific disciplines.
Space Science
We operate in the European space science landscape conducting studies and supporting scientific initiatives. Since 1974, we have provided support and expert advice to European space agencies and decision makers in the space domain. Through independent contract work, we provide studies and analyses to the European Space Agency, EU national space agencies, and other operators in the European space sciences landscape. We host scientific platforms such as the European Space Sciences Committee (ESSC), the European Astrobiology Institute (EAI), and provide support for financial, legal, administrative, and communication matters, as well as stakeholder engagement and policy recommendations.
Inclusive Science
We support the research and innovation community in embedding inclusivity in research by enabling collaborations, mentoring organisations, and providing tailored tools and solutions. Our main activities focus on institutional change, gender equality, citizen science, public engagement, open science, and research ethics. We believe these are essential for a sustainable and impactful research and innovation ecosystem.
Materials Science
With a scientific team expert in physics, chemistry, pharmacy, engineering, and materials science, the Materials cluster primarily coordinates and supports EU-funded projects in this field. This includes supporting assessment of their sustainability and impact, as well as monitoring and analysing research funding. We also provide expertise in communication, dissemination and public awareness-raising to create the most impact.
Research Infrastructure
Our longstanding experience drives the advancement of research infrastructures within EU-funded projects and scientific structures. Since 2000, we have played a pivotal role in shaping the European research infrastructure policy landscape, allowing stakeholders to focus on their scientific endeavours. We ensure that scientific initiatives are effective and impactful as we guide evidence-based recommendations, facilitate policy discussions and take care of administration.
Science Policy Support
ESF plays a supportive and enabling role in research system reform by working with and for organisations that lead science policy development and advice. We offer expert coordination, implementation support, and secretariat services to networks and institutions that shape research agendas across Europe. We empower institutions to implement change: not define policy, but facilitate the work of those who do.
Communication and Dissemination
As a trusted partner in communication, dissemination, and outreach, we support scientific structures and EU-funded projects in maximising their impact. With in-depth understanding of complex research initiatives and outcomes, we enhance their visibility and convey their relevance to the public, policymakers and key stakeholders in research communities. By facilitating effective and accessible communication on complex projects, we enable our partners to concentrate on advancing scientific progress. Importantly, our expertise covers all aspects of communication: from stakeholder engagement, content production and strategy development to social media management, website development, event coordination and work package management.
