Discover PASSENGER’s key findings
About the PASSENGER Project
PASSENGER – Pilot Action for Securing a Sustainable European Next Generation of Efficient RE-free Magnets – is a Horizon 2020 innovation action that addressed Europe’s dependency on rare-earth elements (REs) in the production of permanent magnets (PMs). These magnets are essential for clean and emerging technologies such as electromobility, wind energy, and high-efficiency industrial systems.
The project developed innovative pilot lines to produce high-performance magnets using abundant, sustainable materials, thereby reducing environmental impact while securing Europe’s industrial and technological independence. Bringing together 20 partners from eight EU countries, including leading research institutes, SMEs, and large industrial players, PASSENGER had a strong industrial orientation, focusing on delivering real-world, scalable solutions.
ESF's role in PASSENGER
ESF led the work package on dissemination, ensuring that PASSENGER’s results are widely communicated through digital materials, press releases, videos, events, and publications, making the project’s achievements visible to both expert and general audiences.
PASSENGER Factsheets Produced by ESF
As part of its communication efforts, ESF produced a series of fact sheets showcasing the results and technological progress achieved by each pilot plant and work package within the PASSENGER project.
These fact sheets highlight key outcomes, industrial validations, and sustainability results, offering concise and accessible overviews of the innovations developed throughout the project. They form an integral part of PASSENGER’s outreach. They are designed to inform industrial stakeholders, researchers, policymakers, and the general public about how Europe is pioneering next-generation, rare-earth-free permanent magnet technologies.
#1: Rare Earth free permanent magnets: a game changer for a greener tomorrow
Key facts about the technological, economical, and environmental benefits of rare-earth-free permanent magnets!
#2: Navigating the EU path in securing Critical Raw Materials (CRMs) for a sustainable future
Key facts and figures about CRMs and how Europe addresses import dependence.
#3: PASSENGER: a solution for future-proof permanent magnets made in Europe
The PASSENGER project aims to make the European permanent magnets industry more sustainable and self-reliant by tackling the EU’s reliance on rare-earth elements. Here are some quick facts.
#4: PASSENGER: advancing safe and sustainable magnet production
The PASSENGER project is dedicated to developing a new generation of sustainable, rare-earth-free magnets, which are safer for both people and the planet.
#5: Manganese-Aluminium-Carbon magnets: from proof of concept to optimisation and industrial scale
The PASSENGER project is exploring more sustainable alternatives to rare earth magnets using instead widely available materials like manganese, aluminum, and carbon.
#6: Strontium Ferrite magnets: advanced magnetic powder with improved temperature performance
To reduce Europe’s dependence on REEs, the PASSENGER project is developing more sustainable alternatives, including improved strontium ferrite magnets that maintain their performance across varying temperatures.
#7: PASSENGER: Enriching the EU’s Raw Materials Information System (RMIS)
PASSENGER systematically feeds the RMIS with high-quality, validated data from its research findings, enhancing Europe’s understanding of the raw material dynamics and supporting the transition to a more sustainable and autonomous future.
#8: PASSENGER: How Rare-Earth-free magnets are building a more resilient Europe
Europe imports nearly 100% of its rare earth elements with recycling rates below 1%, threatening its green transition. PASSENGER addresses this by developing rare-earth-free permanent magnets from European materials, which can create jobs, lower costs, and strengthen supply chain resilience and industrial independence of the European economy.
