The Obergurgl University Centre is located at an altitude of 1940 metres, in the highest glacial village in the Tyrol, at the end of the Ötz Valley and surrounded by numerous three-thousand metre peaks.
Group transportation will be arranged from/to Innsbruck airport, via Innsbruck train station, on arrival and departure days.

Capturing CO₂ at large industrial plants and storing it underground in deep geological layers is a top priority in the race to significantly reduce atmospheric emissions of greenhouse gases (GHG), thus helping to mitigate climate change and ocean acidification. By storing CO₂ underground, the carbon released through burning coal, oil and gas is returned back to where it was extracted, rather than released into the atmosphere.

Since the 90’s, a huge research effort on CO₂ geological storage, especially in Europe, has led to significant outcomes and the technology has now reached a transition stage between research and worldwide deployment. There is now a need to assess the progress made, to bridge gaps between industry and research, to spread the results to a larger community of scientists and to train young engineers and researchers.

The aim of this conference is therefore to draw conclusions from the last decades of research and to outline the future challenges to be faced along the road to industrial implementation.
The interlinked presentations will unroll as follows:
Firstly, a run-through of the characteristics of a good site for geological storage and how to select such sites (day 1),  then the modelling techniques available to determine the behaviour of CO₂ in the reservoir (day 2), and consequently how to assess the risks linked to geological storage (day 3), followed by how to monitor a storage site (day 4). Finally, a summary of the whole process of a CO₂ geological storage project, from design through injection to closure and then abandonment, will be given (day 5). In addition, two sessions will focus on current and planned industrial demonstrations worldwide (days 2 and 4).
At the end of each day, an open discussion session will enable participants to raise specific issues and to take on a broader perspective of the whole process.

GROUP TRANSPORTATION

Two buses will be arranged on arrival and departure day between Innsbruck railway station, via Innsbruck airport and Obergurgl. The journey takes approximately 1.5 hours.  

Bus departure times on Sunday, 22 November
From Innsbruck railway station: 15.45 and 17.45
From Innsbruck airport: 16.00 and 18.00
 
Bus departure times on Friday, 27 November
From Obergurgl: 8.00 and 9.00

ACCOMMODATION

Please note that SINGLE accommodation can only be guaranteed to invited speakers. All other participants will have to share a TWIN room. In case single rooms would become available at the time of the conference, rooms will be attributed on a “first come, first served” basis. Only the TWIN conference fee should be paid to the ESF when registering. The supplement for single should be paid to the venue directly. Should you wish to be put on waiting list for single accommodation, please contact Ms. Anne Blondeel-Oman.

What conference fee covers

Basic expenses comprise:

• registration and meeting costs;
• accommodation in twin room sharing with another participant;
  
• all meals, coffee breaks and drinks included;
  
• participation at the excursion and the conference dinner;
  
• group transportation from/to the nearest airport.

Should you need to cancel your participation, please contact the Conference Officer immediately. If notice of cancellation is received more than two weeks before the conference, all but EUR 100 will be reimbursed. No refund is possible if notice of cancellation is received less than two weeks before the conference.
