SCIENCE STAFF

Dr. Nina Kancewicz-Hoffman

Nina Kancewicz-Hoffman is the Head of Humanities and Social Sciences Unit; she gained her PhD in Slavic Languages and Literatures from Columbia University, New York, subsequently working in Poland in education, culture and science policy and management. Her knowledge of European research and higher education policy in the global context, with focus on Humanities and related research domains has been important to the ESF.

She has worked with the ESF since November 2003, first in the Chief Executive unit as Senior Science Officer – Corporate Science Policy where she was responsible for quality assurance of peer review and research funding processes and ESF Forward Looks, as of November 2008 heading the Humanities unit and, as of October 2010, the newly-fusioned Humanities and Social Sciences Unit.

 Nina is specifically responsible for overseeing Standing Committee business, and all other activities of a strategic and science policy nature.

Dr. Rifka Weehuizen

Dr. Rifka Weehuizen has an MA in History and a PhD in Economics. She has worked as a researcher at UNU-MERIT, a research institute of the University of Maastricht in the field of science, technology and economic growth, specifically on the psychological dimensions of economic growth. In addition Rifka has worked for the Netherlands Advisory Council on Science and Technology Policy (AWT) and for the Netherlands Advisory Council for Health Research (RGO).

As Acting Senior Science Officer, Rifka will be responsible for Exploratory Workshops, Research Networking Programmes, strategic activities and Forward Looks.

Ms. Sarah Moore

Ms. Sarah Moore has worked at the European Commission’s Centre for Research on Lifelong Learning (CRELL) at the Joint Research Centre in Italy and for the Irish Research Council for Humanities and Social Sciences (IRCHSS).

Sarah has a Master in Education Studies from Trinity College Dublin and is currently working as Science Officer for the Social Sciences at the ESF, and is responsible for all running EUROCORES programmes in the Social Sciences and the annual Theme Call.

Mr. Diego de la Hoz del Hoyo

Mr. Diego de la Hoz del Hoyo is a Telecommunications Engineer with postgraduate training in knowledge and information society, social studies in science and technology, computer simulations in multidisciplinary decision-making processes, international cooperation and strategic IT management.

Diego arrived at the ESF in the framework of a traineeship agreement with the Spanish Ministry of Science and Innovation (MICINN).  During his time at the ESF, Diego will work as a Visiting Junior Science Officer for the Humanities and Social Sciences Unit and Corporate Science Strategy Development.  For the social sciences, he will be involved particularly in 'e-social science' initiatives, Research Infrastructure issues and the scoping phase of a project on "The Future of Science in Society".

ADMINISTRATIVE STAFF


Mrs. Rhona Heywood-Roos

After graduating from Oxford, UK, with an MA in Modern Languages, Mrs. Rhona Heywood-Roos worked for a few years in the Research Conferences Unit before joining the unit, where she is now Senior Administrator and Unit Coordinator.

Rhona is responsible for matters relating to the Standing Committee for the Social Sciences (SCSS), Forward Looks and other strategic activities.

Ms. Caroline Eckert

Ms. Caroline Eckert has a degree in Applied Foreign Languages from  the  University of Strasbourg, where she studied English and Spanish. She is a French native speaker and has been working for ESF since 1999.  

Caroline is a Senior Administrator in the unit and deals mostly with Research Networking Programmes (RNPs) and European Collaborative Research Projects in the Social Sciences (ECRP).

Mrs. Céline Ottenwelter-Quedrue

Mrs. Céline Ottenwelter-Quedrue has a degree in Leisure and Tourism, and joined the ESF in December 2000. After holding several administrative positions, she started working in the unit in September 2006 as Administrator.

Céline is responsible for the daily administration of the European Social Survey, of the reviewing process of Exploratory Workshops and Research Networking Programmes and of various strategic activities.

Ms. Päivi McIntosh

Ms. Päivi McIntosh has a Masters degrees in English and Information Science. She first joined ESF in 2005, working in the Humanities Unit on the Reference Index project.  

Since  April 2008, Päivi has worked part-time on EUROCORES programmes for the Social Sciences and the Life, Earth and Environmental Sciences units.  She is Administrator for two EUROCORES and responsible for the annual EUROCORES Theme Call.
