The Standing Committee for the Social Sciences (SCSS) is chaired by Professor Sir Roderick Floud, Dean of London University's School of Advanced Study and Provost of Gresham College.
The Committee is composed of its members, leading scientists nominated by the ESF Member Organisations (research councils or academies) working in social sciences, and observers from other social science institutions. Along with national experts, several observers from key social science institutions are also participating in two plenary meetings per year helping to shape the SCSS' role in the European Research Area.
The task of the committee is to advance Social Sciences on a European level by supporting innovative research ideas and approaches from the scientific community. Scientific agenda setting is therefore a crucial element of Standing Committee work.

In 2008 and 2009, the most important activity in the SCSS is a Position Paper. The work started with the definition of the most serious European social and societal problems that social sciences have given help in solving, e.g. migration, ageing, climate change, innovation and inequalities. Experts in and outside the Standing Committee have been working on the short pieces that map the contribution of the social sciences to the solution to these problems. The Position Paper will also compare the situation of social sciences in and outside Europe, and, more importantly, maps the gaps in provisions that may be the main reasons why Europe has been lagging behind other continents in a number of fields of social sciences.
