The Physical and Engineering Sciences are key drivers for research and innovation, providing fundamental insights and creating new applications for mankind.
The goal of the ESF Standing Committee for Physical and Engineering Sciences (PESC) is to become the pan-European platform for innovative research and competitive new ideas while addressing societal issues in a more effective and sustainable manner. The Committee is a unique cross-disciplinary group, with networking activities comprising a good mix of experimental and theoretical approaches. It distinguishes itself by focusing on fundamental research and engineering. PESC covers the following broad spectrum of fields;
PESC News is a twice-yearly publication that provides an insight into the business of the Standing Committee for the Physical and Engineering Sciences (PESC) and the activities currently running in PESC's remit. PESC News No. 9 contains pieces on the US-Europe Workshop on Biologically Inspired Engineering for Sensors and Actuators, the current EUROCORES Programmes, Forward Looks, and much more.
Highlights 2007 illustrates selected initiatives and activities of the year 2007. The briefs and stories focus on the science behind the activities. They are meant to give a scientifically interested reader a picture of the independent scientific work PESC promotes.
Examples include the EUROCORES programmes Self-Organised Nano-Structures (SONS) and Smart Structural Systems Technologies (S3T). The Research Networking Programme “Nanoscience and Engineering in Superconductivity (NES)” and the Exploratory Workshop “Coherence, Decoherence and Entanglement of Non-Degenerate Massive Quantum Systems” held in Vienna, Austria in October are also highlighted. Science policy issues highlighted include the 2007 meeting with ESF Member Organisations which focussed on chemistry and cooperation with the European Materials Research Society and the European Materials Forum.
