Physical and Engineering Sciences

The Physical and Engineering Sciences are key drivers for research and innovation, providing fundamental insights and creating new applications for mankind.

The goal of the ESF Standing Committee for Physical and Engineering Sciences (PESC) is to become the pan-European platform for innovative research and competitive new ideas while addressing societal issues in a more effective and sustainable manner.  The Committee is a unique cross-disciplinary group, with networking activities comprising a good mix of experimental and theoretical approaches. It distinguishes itself by focusing on fundamental research and engineering. PESC covers the following broad spectrum of fields;

  • chemistry
  • mathematics
  • informatics and the computer sciences
  • physics
  • fundamental engineering sciences
  • materials sciences

PESC News is a twice-yearly publication that provides an insight into the business of the Standing Committee for the Physical and Engineering Sciences (PESC) and the activities currently running in PESC's remit.  For PESC News No. 10 click on the image or the link.

Highlights 2008  illustrates selected initiatives and activities of the year 2008. The briefs and stories focus on the science behind the activities. They are meant to give a scientifically interested reader a picture of the independent scientific work PESC promotes.

Examples include the initiative on "Bio-inspired Engineering of Sensors, Actuators and Systems (EuroBioSAS) , the EUROCORES programmes European Quantum Standards and Metrology (EuroQUASAR), Cold Quantum Matter (EuroQUAM) and Self-Organised Nano-Structures (SONS 2). The Research Networking Programme “Computational Astrophysics and Cosmology (AstroSim)" and the Exploratory Workshop “Hyperbranched polymers as novel materials for nanoscale applications: insight from experiment, theory and simulations (HYPER-NANO)” held in Fodele, Crete, in May 2008 are also highlighted.  Other initiatives highlighted include the "Women in Science" meeting organised during the EMRS Spring meeting.
