ESF Research Infrastructures

ESF Research Infrastructures

The ESF Plan 2002-2006 places particular emphasis on ESF action on Research Infrastructures (RI).  A special ESF Action Line on RI has been launched with the remit to explore core issues of research infrastructures and provide advice from an independent, European, science-driven perspective,taking into account the optimal use of the human and financial resources available in Europe.

The Action Line aims to provide a range of exploratory and advisory activities covering all ESF science domains, and including specific policy issues, serving the needs of European science and research and of the principal actors involved.

ESF’s definition of Research Infrastructures covers:

  • large research facilities with a unique capability;

  • medium or small scale research infrastructures which have a European-wide or regional impact (single-site or distributed);

  • scientific data bases or collections (single-site or distributed) of substantial value and European impact;  and

  • underpinning infrastructure, such as broadband connectivity or GRIDS, for European science research.

ESF responds to qualified requests and needs identified by ESF Member Organisations, the research community at large, external organisations, or generated by ESF activities.  Information from ESF Member Organisations about their plans and involvement in specific research infrastructure topics should provide valuable input for every ESF action.  ESF recognizes that also other actors are involved in the provision of research infrastructure within Europe and globaly and aims to work in partnership with them.

This Action Line will be pursued in the fist instance through ESF Standing Committees and Expert Groups, complemented by special panels.  The ESF Research Infrastructures Unit provides advice, coordination and support.

The initial agenda of the ESF Action Line on RI comprises more than 2 dozen actions on research infrastructure.  This current agenda will expand.
