In 2004 under the special ESF Action Line on Research Infrastructures, EMRC has conducted an ESF European Survey on Research Infrastructures for Biomedical Sciences. Advised by a Working Group established for this activity, the Survey was executed in consultation with other relevant ESF Standing Committees, in particular LESC.
Through a science-driven bottom-up approach, the Survey was intended to address the needs on Research Infrastructures in biomedical sciences and the optimal and feasible actions in response to the needs. The objective of this Survey was to compile a comprehensive report reflecting the wish list of the bio-medical science communities together with a European inventory of currently available European Research Infrastructures with technical details.
Subsequently, a comparative evaluation was carried out to identify the strengths, weaknesses and gaps of the present situation. A Road Map for the development and strengthening of Research Infrastructures for biomedical sciences in Europe was then be elaborated to deliver science-driven recommendations to the relevant actors on how to meet the needs and challenges.
