Within its scope of activities the EMRC has placed emphasis on the innovative medical research with the objective to improve human health including a better understanding of the causes and essential pathways responsible for the manifestation of complex diseases.
The Medical Science Unit has been tapping into many relevant and important issues for Europe’s future – it has, for example, dapped into the topics of Rheumatic Diseases, Glycomics, Medical Imaging, Biobanking, Lipidomics under the Science Policy Activities.
The Unit also participates in the interdisciplinary Forward Look on Systems Biology, alongside the Physical Sciences and Life Sciences Units. By breaking down complex biological systems into the chemical conversions and physical interactions which create them, it is hoped to develop a deeper insight into the essence of life.
The Unit has also formulated a EUROCORES programme that deals with Stem Cell – an attempt to gain fundamental knowledge on stem cell biology, plus another EUROCORES programme on Pan-European Clinical Trials which has generated a lot of interest from the general public.
The Medical Science unit has also shared a Research Networking Programmes on Genomics with the Life Science Unit
