Marine and Maritime Research included in the EC Horizon 2020 proposals.
The European Commission Communication “Horizon 2020 – The Framework Programme for Research and Innovation” (30/11/2011, download) explicitely includes marine and maritime research in the Horizon 2020 proposals:

“Funding will be focused on the following challenges:

  1. Health, demographic change and wellbeing;
  2. Food security, sustainable agriculture, marine and maritime research and the bio-economy;
  3. Secure, clean and efficient energy;
  4. Smart, green and integrated transport;
  5. Climate action, resource efficiency and raw materials;
  6. Inclusive, innovative and secure societies.”

Through its key involvement in EurOCEAN 2010 and the Ostend Declaration (download), as well as a number of documents and statements, the Marine Board has been very active in highlighting the need for direct support for seas and oceans research to be included in the Horizon 2020 proposals. This voice has been now heard.

The Marine Board will contribute to the strategic plan for marine and maritime research to be designed by the Commission, through the Navigating the Future IV position paper (set for publication in mid-2012) and other targeted interventions during 2012 and 2013.
