Europlanet

The Europlanet 2020 Research Infrastructure is a Research Infrastructure (RI) supported for four years by the European Union's Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under grant agreement No 654208.

Project Summary

Planetary science is an interdisciplinary field of research that covers astronomy and geophysics, robotic and human exploration of other planets, as well as the search for extra-terrestrial life.

With more than 200 research groups and institutions across Europe, the primary objective of Europlanet 2020 RI is to overcome fragmentation and to share resources within Europe’s planetary science community.

This project addresses key scientific and technological challenges facing modern planetary science by providing open access to state-of-the-art research data, models and facilities across the European Research Area.

Project consortium

The Europlanet 2020 RI project is coordinated by the Open University, UK. The project has 33 beneficiary institutions from 19 European countries, representing the core of European planetary sciences.

ESF tasks in Europlanet 2020 RI are being co-ordinated by Dr. Ana-Maria Ciubotaru, Ms. Isabelle Vonesch and Mr. Nicolas Walter.

Role of ESF

Within the management of Europlanet 2020 RI, ESF implements competitive calls for access to research infrastructure and planetary analogue field sites.

In particular, ESF is in charge of collecting research applications and implementing the independent scientific assessment that informs the selection process. To provide robust evaluations of proposals, ESF relies on its extensive experience and wide network of experts.

ESF will also collect feedback from selected projects in order to evaluate the impact of Europlanet 2020 RI’s scheme for access to research infrastructure and planetary analogue field sites.

Timeline & Funding

The project is funded under the European Commission’s Horizon 2020 programme at a level of €9.95M. It was launched on 1st September 2015 and will run until 31 August 2019.
