CALL FOR 2018 CAREER TRACKING SURVEY OF DOCTORATE HOLDERS

UNIVERSITIES AND RESEARCH PERFORMING ORGANISATIONS
ARE INVITED TO TAKE PART IN THIS SURVEY

What is involved ?

A peer reviewed online questionnaire will be used in order to provide participating organisations from across Europe with anonymised data on their doctorate graduates, including their employment situation and skills utilisation patterns, satisfaction levels, mobility and relevant demographic data. The survey will explore doctorate career trajectories up to seven years after PhD completion.

Why should your organisation participate ?

  • To better understand the occupational and mobility patterns as well as satisfaction levels of your doctorate graduates
  • To collect data for your monitoring and planning purposes to improve doctoral education and career advice
  • To take part in a joint initiative and discussions on standards, measures and intended outcomes of doctoral training schemes and career development

Online questionnaire

  • Developed by ESF-Science Connect during the 2014-2017 career tracking projects
  • Bottom-up approach: partner organisations are actively involved in adapting the questionnaire to their needs
  • User-friendly with around 40-45 concise questions in the core questionnaire, with up to five organisation-specific questions
  • Structured into sections, e.g. doctorate education, transition to first employment, employment situation, mobility and demographics
  • Space for sensitivity analysis of questions of interest, e.g. sectoral contact between academia and industry

Deliverables

  • Organisational reports for each partner, including anonymised data on their doctorate holder population
  • General report with aggregated trends across all participating organisations
  • Possibility of supplementary comparative studies among interested partners (inter-institutional benchmarking)

Partner responsibilities

  • Prepare a contact list of doctorate holders for the agreed period after PhD completion, including first and last names, a valid email address and the date of PhD completion
  • Provide feedback on the methodology, questionnaire, analysis and progress of the project
  • Make a financial contribution of funding towards the project

Indicative timeline

The overall project duration will be 12 months and will commence in the first half of 2018 once the consortium is complete.
