Europe gets together to harness quantum physics
The long cherished goal of applying the strange properties of quantum mechanics to the macroscopic world we inhabit has been brought closer by a series of recent developments. The exciting progress was made in the important field of quantum optics and discussed recently at a high level conference...Finding out what the big bang and ink jets have in common

ESF’s EuroQUAM Programme holds Inauguration ConferenceEuropean light research opens door for optical storage and computing
The goal of replacing electronics with optics for processing data in computers is coming closer through cutting edge European research into the mysterious properties of “fast and slow” light. The long term aim is to boost processing speeds and data storage densities by several orders of magnitude...Computation and experiment combine to unravel how genes are regulated and shed light on how cells become different
A closer alliance between computational and experimental researchers is needed to make progress towards one of biology’s most challenging goals, understanding how epigenetic marks contribute to regulation of gene expression. This emerged from a recent workshop organised by the European Science...Europe to build state of the art laboratory to study how stars evolve and elements are formed in cosmos
One of the great ongoing challenges of astrophysics, to find out how stars evolve and die, is to be tackled in an ambitious European research programme. This will involve studying in the laboratory over 25 critical nuclear reactions using low-energy stable beams of ions, in order to understand...New EUROCORES Brochure

ESF joins forces with the European Commission in launching a European Research Infrastructures portal
As a follow up to their successful collaboration, alongside EuroHORCs, in compiling the 2nd European Survey of Research Infrastructures during 2007, the ESF and the EC have launched a joint activity to increase the mapping of European-level RI to create a resource for the benefit of both the research community and policy makers. The Portal provides information on RI already in the database as a result of the Survey and the opportunity for further RI to be proposed for inclusion. ESF’s Standing Committee’s play a crucial role in the scientific validation of entries in the database.
