European Science Foundation calls for more and better medical imaging research
The European Science Foundation (ESF) has called for greater collaboration across Europe on research on medical imaging. In October 2007, the medical section of the ESF, the European Medical Research Councils (EMRC), published a science policy briefing on “Medical Imaging for Improved Patient Care”, based on a workshop attended by key experts in the field of medical imaging. This policy briefing emphasises the great potential of medical imaging, outlines European issues and challenges and presents policy recommendations. More (pdf)
Paving the way for future pan-European Clinical Trials
Pan-European collaboration is important for many clinical trials and essential for trials that are investigating treatments for rare diseases. That was the message delivered today by the European Medical Research Councils (EMRC), the membership organisation for medical research councils across...System Biology: an innovative agenda for combating disease; a new biotechnology

New ESF report calls for coordinated action to accelerate European Systems Biology researchESF funds European Neuroscience and Society Network; starts in June 2007
The past two decades have seen unprecedented progress and innovation in the neurosciences. Despite evidence that advances in the neurosciences are having a significant impact on the lives of individuals across Europe, there has been little formal engagement within the European social sciences with...Seven new EUROCORES proposals given the go ahead
The EUROCORES Committee and the ESF Standing Committees have selected another seven theme proposals to be developed further into EUROCORES programmes.Setting the Context of Nanomedicine for the Future
The European Science Foundation (ESF) recently undertook a Forward Look on Nanomedicine, defining the current status and future prospects in this new and important emerging field. One of the recommendations relating to research, training and improved communication was the need to establish a...European Science Foundation Publishes Forward Look Report on Nanomedicine
The European Science Foundation recently concluded a foresight study on the topic of nanotechnology applied to medicine (Scientific Forward Look on Nanomedicine). The goal of this Forward Look was to exchange views on the current status of Nanomedicine between scientific experts and policy makers,...Liposuctioned fat stem cells to repair bodies
Expanding waistlines, unsightly bulges: people will gladly remove excess body fat to improve their looks. But unwanted fat also contains stem cells with the potential to repair defects and heal injuries in the body. A team led by Philippe Collas at the University of Oslo in Norway has identified...Cancer is a stem cell issue
There is an urgent reason to study stem cells: stem cells are at the heart of some, if not all, cancers. Mounting evidence implicates a clutch of rogue stem cells brandishing ‘epigenetic’ marks as the main culprits in cancer. Wiping out tumours for good, some biologists believe, depends on...Finding a cure for cancer: the holy grail of science
At a recent EuroDYNA conference in Brno, Czech Republic, scientists from around Europe came together to share their research carried out in the field of genetics and cell nucleus architecture. A greater understanding of the body’s building blocks might ultimately lead to a better understanding of...EMRC Newsletters - Keeping you informed of the latest developments from the European Medical Research Councils.
