European Science Foundation calls for more and better medical imaging research
The European Science Foundation (ESF) has called for greater collaboration across Europe on research on medical imaging. In October 2007, the medical section of the ESF, the European Medical Research Councils (EMRC), published a science policy briefing on “Medical Imaging for Improved Patient Care”, based on a workshop attended by key experts in the field of medical imaging. This policy briefing emphasises the great potential of medical imaging, outlines European issues and challenges and presents policy recommendations. More (pdf)
A New Manifesto For Medical Research In Europe
Public spending on medical research in Europe should be doubled over the next ten years to ensure the health and welfare of Europe’s citizens and to nurture a thriving medical research industry, according to an influential panel of distinguished scientists. In addition there should be greater...The winding road from farm to fork: ESF - COST to hold conference on Food Systems
Food is a basic human need. But in an advanced society, it gets to us in complex ways. On November 5-6, the European Science Foundation (ESF) and the European Cooperation in the field of Scientific and Technical Research (COST) will gather experts on the food systems to consider the scientific and...Improving Europe’s Image
The European Science Foundation calls for greater collaboration across Europe on research in medical imaging. New imaging technologies will result in improved and cost-effective healthcare, the ESF says, but there needs to be closer cooperation between doctors, scientists and industry if Europe...AN EYE FOR AN EYE: Using stem cells to treat damaged eyes and a rare skin disorder
Stem cells can be used to grow new corneal tissue and, together with gene therapy, treat a rare genetic skin disorderNew Stem Cells by Reprogramming
By ‘de-programming’ existing specialised cells it might be possible to create cells which resemble embryonic stem cells, bypassing many of the ethical and moral objections to using human embryosStem Cell Research Marches On

Pan-European collaboration is important for many clinical trials and essential for trials that are investigating treatments for rare diseases. That was the message delivered today by the European Medical Research Councils (EMRC), the membership organisation for medical research councils across...System Biology: an innovative agenda for combating disease; a new biotechnology
