Impact and uptake of Navigating the Future III

Navigating the Future III, the Marine Board’s contribution towards the development of the marine component of the European Research Area was noted, at its official launch in January 2007, as a highlight on the road to the 7th Research Framework Programme by Peter Heffernan – CEO of the Irish Marine Institute.

“This piece of work is very useful for us [European Commission] to develop work programmes after 2007” stated Pierre Mathy – Head of Unit, DG RTD.

Olle Hagstrom – Head of Unit, DG Fisheries and Maritime Affairs - noted Navigating the Future III as a reference source for identification and prioritisation of marine research drivers (January 2007).

'Investigating the Oceans' (October 2007) by the UK House of Commons Select Committee on Science and Technology points out the “ Marine Board plays an important role in bringing together the marine community (…) taking an increasingly proactive role in highlighting the contribution that marine sciences can make to the policy agenda”  and describes “Navigating the Future III as an excellent synthesis of perspectives on marine science and technology in Europe” .

This report also acknowledges Marine Board involvement in the “progressive institutional self-organisation of the Marine Science Community at the European level”.
