Structure

The Marine Board Member Organisations are essentially composed of major national marine scientific institutes and/or funding agencies in Europe. At present, 17 countries are represented by one or two agencies or institutes per country, leading to a total membership of 25. Membership of the Marine Board is not restricted to ESF Member Organisations. While classified within ESF as an “Expert Committee”, the Marine Board is not a committee of experts as such; rather, it is a strategic entity, whose Member Organisations’ (MOs) delegates represent national perspectives on marine research priorities.

The Marine Board is entirely self-financed by direct contributions from its Member Organisations.

Membership

The Marine Board, operating within the ESF, is a non-governmental organisation. Its institutional membership is composed of organisations which are major national marine scientific institutes and/or funding organisations within their country in Europe. No more than two organisations per country can be members of the ESF Marine Board.

The Marine Board has an Executive Committee consisting of:

  • Chair: Lars Horn, RCN - Norway

  • vice-Chairs:
Dr Antoine Dosdat, Ifremer - France
Dr Ed Hill, NOCS - UK
Dr Jan de Leeuw, NIOZ - The Netherlands
Dr Jan Mees, VLIZ - Belgium
Dr Kostas Nittis, HCMR - Greece
  • Executive Scientific Secretary:
    Dr Niamh Connolly

Membership is open to organisations which are based in Europe and are either ESF member organisations, major national marine scientific institutions, or groups of national relevant scientific institutions which combine to form a single membership to the ESF Marine Board.
