Accountability in Science and Research Funding

On 5 -7 June 2007, the European Science Foundation hosted an international Workshop on challenges of accountability organised by the US National Science Foundation.
 
The workshop “Accountability in Science and Research Funding”, which took place at ESF office in Strasbourg on 5 – 7 June 2007 aimed to identify and discuss arising challenges in financial administration and compliance with institutional regulatory frameworks issues. Best practices for addressing these challenges were discussed.

The 2007 workshop, co-chaired by Christine C. Boesz (NSF) and David Weber (ESF), was the fifth in a series of annual workshops which is co-sponsored by the Office of the Inspector General of the US National Science Foundation (NSF) and the European Science Foundation (ESF). The purpose is to gather officials from research organizations responsible for the oversight of programmes and operations to discuss arising challenges and exchange their experiences on strategies.

The first Accountability Workshop was held in Paris in 2003 and focused on organizational structure and missions of funding organizations. The 2004 Workshop in Dublin focused on implementation of audit practices and compliance monitoring. The Third Workshop in 2005 in Bonn examined oversight strategies, while last year’s event held in The Hague focused on theme of evaluating and managing Risk.
