Final Programme and List of Accepted Participants
Current research projects studying human evolution and diversity or the genetic/genomic factors underlying complex, multi-factorial human diseases need the collection of thousands of biological samples with associated epidemiological, genealogical, lifestyle and/or clinical data. In order to promote and facilitate high quality research in these areas, biobanks are created as organised technological platforms to help researchers in the recruitment of such huge numbers of good quality human samples.
The advance of biotechnology and bioinformatics and the amount of genetic information available through both the Human Genome and HapMap projects, together with the availability of biobank-associated genetic databases, have fostered and highly facilitated genetic/genomic research. At the same time they have generated the need for a rational, ethical and legal management of such resources to ensure appropriate use of the available sample and data collection resources, guaranteeing a balanced promotion of research for the benefit of the community and protection of the rights of the donors (i.e. autonomy of decision and confidentiality). In creating these new structures and networks, different countries have developed different regulations/ recommendations regarding biomedical research, ethical procedures, intellectual property and data protection. The need of sample and data sharing through the establishment of cooperative trans-national projects highlights the interest of biobanking harmonisation promoted by international consortia with the aim of establishing common frameworks that would allow researchers access to a higher number of representative -good quality- samples.
The ESF-UB Conference on Biobanks will be focused on providing an open forum of discussion on all aspects involved in the governance, management and use of human biobanks, technical solutions, ethical, legal, and social aspects, also providing participants with a broad overview of the existing models of biobanks and the international initiatives on population-based and disease-oriented biobanks.

GROUP TRANSPORTATION
Three buses will be arranged on arrival day from Barcelona airport to Sant Feliu. The journey takes approximately 2 hours, depending on traffic.
Bus departure times – Saturday 1 November: 16.30 and 17.30 and 18.30
Airport departure point: the buses will wait in the special bus parking area located just before the A terminal. Each bus has been requested to be at the meeting point 20-30 minutes before scheduled departure. The coaches will have a sign in the window indicating “ESF Research Conferences” for easy recognition.
Group transportation back to Barcelona airport will be arranged in a similar way for the departure day.
Bus departure times – Thursday 6 November: 08.00 and 09.00
ACCOMMODATION
SINGLE accommodation can only be guaranteed for invited speakers. All other participants will share TWIN rooms.
Some single rooms are available for participants on a first come, first served basis. To obtain a single room, you may book it at the following website, AFTER you have completed your registration:
Please select ESF SINGLE ROOM SUPPLEMENT in the “room type” drop down box and follow further instructions. Please note that you will be asked to pay a deposit.

This conference is organised by the European Science Foundation (ESF) in partnership with the University of Barcelona.
Links of interest
- Biomaterials Network (Biomat.net) is an interactive source of information, where users can actively participate and communicate with each other. Membership to Biomat.net is free. Biomat.net is aimed at linking the biomaterials and tissue engineering community worldwide. The site provides updated news in the field, delivered through a monthly newsletter, and also a collection of selected internet links related to biomaterials science and tissue engineering, as well as relevant links to biomedical engineering, biology, medicine and health sciences in general. Biomat.net facilities additionally include a glossary of related terms, a discussion forum, a job exchange section, and the Directory of members, where research expertise can be searched.
- Promoting Harmonisation of Epidemiological Biobanks in Europe (PHOEBE) The EU funded project PHOEBE aims to establish a collaborative research network that will identify and explore key issues that will help to ensure that Europe makes best use of its rich array of population-based biobanks and longitudinal cohort studies.
- ENGAGE is a research project funded by the European Commission under the 7th Framework Programme-Health Theme. The project duration is five years, starting from January 1st, 2008. The ENGAGE Consortium has brought together 22 leading research organisations and two biotechnology and pharmaceutical companies across Europe and in Canada and Australia. ENGAGE has, as its central objective, the translation of the wealth of data emerging from large-scale research efforts in molecular epidemiology into information of direct relevance to future advances in clinical medicine. This will be achieved through the integration of very large-scale genetic and phenotypic data already available from a substantial number of large and well-characterised European (and other) sample sets of various types.
- EuroBoNeT is a European network of excellence to promote research into uncommon cancers in adults and children (pathology, biology and genetics of bone tumours) funded by the European Community’s Sixth Framework Programme. Twenty-four European institutes participate in the project. The project has started on the 1st of February 2006 for aduration of five years and focuses especially on cartilaginous tumours, osteosarcoma, giant cell tumours and Ewing sarcomas. The Leiden University Medical Centre (LUMC) in the Netherlands is the scientific coordinator for this project. Through integration, the EuroBoNeT consortium strives to increase and disseminate knowledge of primary bone tumours at the molecular level for development of new tools for patient care and cure, and technology. Staff exchange, exchange of materials (virtual BioBank), standard operating procedures and the use of technology platforms will be the main objectives to achieve this goal and to create a durable integration.
