Dates
19-24 May 2007
Location
Universitätszentrum Obergurgl, Ötz Valley, near Innsbruck, Austria
The Obergurgl University Centre is located at an altitude of 1940 metres, in the highest glacial village in the Tyrol, at the end of the Ötz Valley and surrounded by numerous three-thousand metre peaks. Group transportation will be arranged from/to Innsbruck airport, via Innsbruck train station, on arrival and departure days.
Final Programme & List of Accepted Participants
The conference aims to present an updated view on and advance understanding of the interhemispheric significance of rapid ocean and climate change by focusing on past periods of natural anomalous perturbation of the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation. Research groups from the marine and ice core palaeoclimatology and climate modeling communities will present the state-of-the-art of their research into the sources and interhemispheric propagation of abrupt ocean and climate signals. Six thematic sessions will integrate the palaeoclimatic evidence in a series of lectures that will be complemented by poster presentations. Time will be dedicated to the dialogue between the disciplines during plenary discussions and guided round table discussions involving senior scientists, young researchers and post-graduate students. It is a stated objective of the conference to encourage participation of early-stage and post-doctoral researchers. The conference programme will be complemented by roundtable discussions, a “talk show” on abrupt climate changes and poster sessions (including brief oral presentations).

GROUP TRANSPORTATION
Two buses will be arranged on arrival day from Innsbruck railway station, via Innsbruck airport, to Obergurgl. The journey from the airport takes approximately 75 minutes (an hour and a half from the station).
Bus departure times - Saturday 19 May:
- from Innsbruck railway station: 15.45 – 18.15
- from Innsbruck airport: 16.00 – 18.30
Airport departure point: the meeting point is located just outside the small airport building. The coaches will have a sign in the window indicating “ESF Research Conferences” for easy recognition.
Group transportation back to Innsbruck will be arranged in a similar way for the departure day, Thursday 24 May. Participants will be requested to sign up on the spot. Buses will be leaving after lunch.

The climate of the Earth is constantly changing, something which in the past was a result of natural causes. Nowadays, the term climate change is mainly used when referring to changes in our climate which generally are a result of human activity. - Salty Oceans provide Early Warning for Climate Change
Monitoring the saltiness of the ocean water could provide an early indicator of climate change. Significant increases or decreases in salt in key areas could forewarn of climate change in 10 to 20 years time. Presenting their findings at a recent European Science Foundation (ESF) conference, scientists predicted that the waters of the southern hemisphere oceans around South Africa and New Zealand are the places to watch.
