Space Weather and the Earth's Weather and Climate

The European Science Foundation (ESF) scientific network Space Weather and the Earth‘s Weather and Climate - Links between Solar Activity, Magnetospheric Variability, Clouds, Thunderstorms and Lightning (SPECIAL II) explores the physical mechanisms by which space weather and space climate are causally linked to the Earth’s weather and climate by solar effects and aerosols, the two largest uncertainties in the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) 2001 report.

In this research area, electrodynamic and electromagnetic processes in the atmosphere are investigated to determine possible links between solar activity, thunderstorms, lightning, sprites, ionospheric variability, cosmic rays, and clouds.

The forthcoming SPECIAL meeting has attracted a large number of international experts and will be held in Frankfurt am Main, Germany, February 20th-23rd, 2003. The scientific programme will begin with a presentation on sprite observations from the Space Shuttle, which are currently conducted by the first israeli astronaut in space.

If you are interested to attend the SPECIAL workshop, please consider the internet page go to website which includes a brief information of the background of SPECIAL and workshop details.
