Future of television on display in Toledo, at ESF / CMP Cientifica Congress

The EuroFE ’99 congress from 15th-19th November 1999 will feature demonstrations of the four leading technologies for ’hang on the wall’ large screen televisions. The first European congress on field emission technologies will feature some of the new displays that will make large flat televisions, portable communications terminals and wristwatch televisions commonplace in the new millennium. The next generation of mobile telephones and laptop computers will also be based on field emission technology, allowing television sets a few millimetres thick to be made.Press Conference 17th November 1999, 13:15 in ToledoDisplay companies from around the globe, including PixTech, The NanoTime Corporation, Motorola, Samsung, & PFE will be demonstrating their latest display technology. This is the first opportunity anywhere to see the competing technologies side by side. The press conference will be followed by lunch, with ample time to discuss the technologies.

The European Science Foundation celebrates its 25th anniversary in 1999. It is the European association of 65 major national funding agencies devoted to scientific research in 22 countries. The ESF assists its member organisations in two main ways: by bringing scientists together in its scientific programmes, networks, exploratory workshops and European research conferences, to work on topics of common concern, and through the joint study of issues of strategic importance in European science policy.

2. The ESF’s scientific network on Field Emission Technologies (EuroFE) was approved in May 1999 and will run for the next three years. Field emission technology holds great promise for a number of commercial applications, including display devices and the fabrication of new nanostructures. It is also a technology in which Europe now lags behind the US, Japan and Korea. By facilitating the free exchange of information between research groups, industry & European policy makers, this new ESF network aims to establish the critical mass which will bring field emission devices out of the laboratory and into every day European life.
