ESF names Professor Guenther Rosner as the Chair of the Nuclear Physics European Collaboration Committee

The European Science Foundation (ESF) has named Professor Guenther Rosner as the new chair of the Nuclear Physics European Collaboration Committee (NuPECC).  The announcement came after the Governing Council of the ESF voiced its endorsement for Professor Rosner to replace Professor Brian Fulton for a 3-year period starting from 1 January 2009.

 “I am delighted to have the opportunity to drive the nuclear physics agenda in Europe in the next couple of years” said Professor Rosner. “This research field has re-gained public attention not only because new large-scale facilities will provide a much better insight into the origin and structure of strongly interacting matter such as atomic nuclei and nucleons, but also because of its extensive applications in industry (energy generation in fission and fusion reactors), medicine (NMR, SPECT, PET imaging and tumor radio and hadron therapy) and other research fields (e.g. astrophysics). ”

Professor Rosner holds currently the Cargill Chair of Natural Philosophy at the Department of Physics & Astronomy of the University of Glasgow. His teaching and research work covers nuclear and hadron structure and spectroscopy, and their applications in related fields such as nuclear medicine or plasma physics. He has written more than 200 original research papers in leading journals.  
 “I look forward to dealing with a challenging task indeed. My first initiative will be to start the process of formulating a new Long Range Plan for Nuclear Physics in Europe and discuss this with my colleagues in ESF,” added Professor Rosner.

With the new position Professor Rosner said he will focus on exploring new opportunities for nuclear research in Europe. European countries that have an active research programmes in nuclear physics and are not yet members of NuPECC should be invited to join the expert board to establish a true European Research Area (ERA) in this scientific discipline.
