Changing Publication Cultures in the Humanities

The HUM (formerly SCH) strategic workshop hosted by the Hungarian Academy of Sciences and initiated by HUM (formerly SCH) ex-member Peter Dávidházi (HU) focused on the following topics:

(1) Monographs as an endangered species in the humanities,
(2) The new horizon of electronic publications,
(3) The changing role of publications in new career models,
(4) Publications and the problems of "lesser used" languages.

Overview of Topics

As a general overview, the papers and the lively discussion at the workshop could be summarised under the following points:
1.    Characteristics of publications in the Humanities
2.    Factors of Change in Publication Cultures in the Humanities
3.    Role of Young Researchers in the current transition phase

In particular, as highlighted in the press release that appeared in December 2009 on the HAS website, the following issues were treated extensively:

  • Evaluation and assessment systems for research outcomes
  • Lingua franca and national languages
  • Print and digital publications/resources
  • ERIH
  • Monographs in the Humanities

Proceedings of the workshop will be published in due time and include contributions from the Humanities Spring 2011 event.
