The Research Council of Norway

Role of organisation
As a strategic agency for all areas of Norwegian research and a research advisor to the governement, the Research Council of Norway was established 1 January 1993, merging five former research councils. Prime objectives are: the formation of values within a sustainable development; cultural understanding, quality of life, democracy and welfare; new scientific disciplines; renewal and development of the Norwegian research system; unified and well-documented research policy.

The Research Council's annual budget of approximately NOK 4 billion comprises public and private funds. Most prominent among funders are the Ministries of Industry and Energy, Education, Research and Church Affairs, Fisheries, Agriculture and the Environment.

Main responsibilities of information office
To make the Council's activities visible and to inform researchers, media, politicians and the public about Council decisions, priorities and planned and ongoing research. Regular publications: Forskning (journal, published 6 times a year), Tell’Us (English language magazine, published once/twice a year), Nysgjerrigper (popular science magazine for children, published 6 times a year) and the Annual Report.
