Role of organisation
INSERM, the French National Institute for Health and Medical Research, is overseen jointly by the Ministry for Health and the Ministry for Research. Its vocation is to promote helath for all. INSERM has a budget of FF 3 billion and it employs around 5 000 people. It has 275 laboratories all over France. INSERM is active in the fields of biology, medicine and health. It has three goals: to develop knowledge in order to improve health; to participate in diagnostic, therapeutic and preventive research, and to share and disseminate knowledge.

Main responsibilities of information office
The office provides information to scientists, the media and social groups. It manages an electronic photo bank ("Serimedis") through the French network Renater which is connected to Internet, and is active in the organisation on information systems.
