Role of organisation

IFREMER, the French research Institute for the Exploitation of the Sea, works in the areas of fundamental and applied marine research. it is reponsible for basic technology which aims to promote new techniques, such as in acoustic imaging and submersibles; the follow-up of aquacultural and fisheries resources; the coastal environment, through three surveillance networks; support for enterprises in the maritime sector, and the operation of the French oceanographic fleet. IFREMER employs 1 200 people. The budget is FF 1 billion.

Main responsibilities of information office
Production of scientific and technical information for the press and those involved with maritime industries, cooperation with scientific and technical centres and the national education system; creation of special events, such as national and international exhibitions; publication policy for technical and scientific books and journals.
