Role of organisation |
The French National Centre for Scientific
research is a large basic research agency. It is devoted to promoting the advancement of
science as well as the nations economic, cultural and social progress. Established
in 1939 as a public organisation dedicated to science and technology, CNRS operates under
the supervisory authority of the Ministry of Higher Education and Research. It has more
than 1,400 units and 25,800 personnel, including 11,600 research scientists and 14,200
professional engineers and support staff. Its budget for 1998 is FF 15,114 billion
(including outlays on value added tax). CNRS is organised into seven scientific
departments, two national institutes, and five interdisciplinary research programmes
covering all fields of fundamental knowledge, including mathematics, physics, chemistry,
natural sciences, life sciences, social sciences and the humanities. CNRS is involved in
numerous partnerships with higher education and universities, other research agencies,
