Role of organisation
The F.W.O.-Vlaanderen's activities are directed towards push back the frontiers of knowledge in all disciplines, stimulating and funding fundamental academic research at the universities in the Flemish Community and at scientific research institutes. Its annual budget in 2002 is 120 million EURO.

To sum up, one may say that the F.W.O.-Vlaanderen is Flanders' instrument for supporting and stimulating fundamental research on the basis of academic, inter-university competition and advancing its quality.

Fundamental research is sustained by first-rate, highly specialised researchers: it forms the basis for new knowledge and the associated human capital provide the basis for the goal-oriented, applied, technological, strategic research and research that may support or determine policy and benefits the whole of the cultural community and society by creating prosperity and well-being.

Editing of annual report; 5-yearly policy plan and expenditure analysis; providing information on fellowships and grants of the FWO; preparing press releases about scientific prizewinners of the FWO; compiling database of scientific experts for public use.
