Interrogating Interculturalism As A New Paradigm: Assessing Foundations and Policies

ESF Exploratory Workshop - SOC (formerly SCSS)

Convened by: Ricard Zapata-Barrero (ES), Tariq Modood (UK)

Location: 28 May-1 June 2014, Barcelona, Spain

Keywords

interculturalism; multiculturalism; integration; public policies; normative foundations.

Summary

Interculturalism, a policy strategy favoured for some years by the Council of Europe, continues to be a rising force in European diversity debates, especially in these times of policy uncertainty and the so-called "crisis of state multiculturalism". The main purpose of this Exploratory Workshop is to identify the main contours of this policy concept and assess its foundations and policy implications. The goal is to interrogate whether Interculturalism marks a policy paradigm shift or whether it is simply a variant within the existing repertoire of diversity policy concepts and approaches.
