FANAS 2010 Conference

Title: Friction and Adhesion in Nanomechanical Systems

Place: Saarbrücker Schloss, Saarbrücken, Germany

Date: 25-28 October 2010

Chair: Roland Bennewitz, INM - Leibniz Institute for New Materials, Saarbrücken, Germany

Programme

The FANAS 2010 conference brought together experts working in the field of friction and adhesion in nanomechanical systems. The conference was the annual meeting of the ESF EUROCORES Programme FANAS, but was open to all scientists working on related topics. Projects in the FANAS Programme aim to reveal the relationships between adhesion and friction at the nano and micro scales as well as mechanisms of energy dissipation in tribological systems. They seek to bridge the gap between the nano, micro and macro scales in friction, lubrication and adhesion, and to control and modify frictional properties. They address nano manipulation at interfaces and study of biomimetic tribological systems as well as tribochemistry.

Following the spirit of past conferences in Trieste and within the Nanotribo Network, the conference was organized as a single-session conference with ample time for discussions. Members of the FANAS Network were accommodated in hotels next to the conference venue.

  • 1st European Nanomanipulation Workshop, Cascais, Portugal from May 17-19, 2010, jointly organized by the NOMCIS and NANOPARMA CRPs of the FANAS programme of the ESF.

The overall focus of the workshop is to bring together scientists who are active in the field of controlled manipulation of atoms, clusters, and nanoscale objects using scanning probe techniques. This includes basic techniques of manipulation, theoretical description of manipulation processes as well as applications ranging from nano- and mesoscale friction to automatic assembly of nano-objects:

- SPM based experimental techniques for manipulation of clusters and nanoscale objects

- Atomic and molecular scale manipulation

- Bio-manipulation

- Theoretical concepts for manipulation approaches and interpretation
- Connections between friction and nanoobject manipulation

Abstract submission deadline is January 31st, 2010.
