The perspective that is emerging on human functioning is best captured by the confluence of different disciplinary perspectives – cognitive sciences, neurosciences, psychology, comparative social cognition and biology.

This disciplinary synergy leads to a vision of behavioral sciences that locates its thematic focus as situated in a social context, involves complex action and interaction, and is grounded by neural as well as socio-cultural processes. The different traditional disciplinary boundaries appear to be gradually fading to give rise to a broadly focused social-cognitive-neuroscience.

This emerging perspective is likely to furnish a transdisciplinary vision of human behavior in a social context. Current developments indicate that there is a paradigm in the making and that it appears to hold the promise of focusing intellectual energy and unifying scholarly activity under the umbrella of social-cognitive neuroscience, the theme of this ESF-JSPS Conference.
