ESF Member Organisation Forum on Research Integrity

About

Background

The level of attention 'Research Integrity' receives varies from country to country. Continued efforts to raise the awareness both in new and old EU member states is required.  There is a need to know the magnitude of research misconduct, its causes and the best ways to address it. The Research Integrity Forum will develop and promote research programs to take stock of what is already known and to better understand research misconduct (occurrences, contributing factors, effectiveness of measures in place etc.). This should help formulate evidence-based policy and promote best practice in this domain.

Aims

The ESF Member Organisation Forum on Research Integrity has created a output-oriented network that brings together ESF Member Organisations and others which play a key role in promoting and safeguarding research integrity (not including at this stage related issues of independence of researchers in contract research and ethical aspects). It will address both the individual aspects of research integrity and the structural science policy aspects (at least to the extent to which ESF Member Organisations are concerned).

Objectives

  • To serve as a platform for various organisations to present each other’s approaches, to discuss their strengths and shortcomings (if any), and thus to act as a vehicle for exchange of good practice.

  • To support and encourage organisations which do not yet have appropriate structures (but are interested in developing them) to learn from the experiences of others and to initiate debates in their respective communities on adequate models.

  • To channel European input to the second World Conference on Research Integrity, scheduled to take place in Singapore in 2010.

Actions

In its activities, the Forum will also take into consideration activities of other organisations to avoid duplication of efforts and ensure that the approaches developed / proposed are compatible with and complementary to each other. Notably, it will build on the activities of the OECD Global Science Forum on Research Integrity and its recommended Procedures to facilitate international research misconduct investigations will be promoted in the forum.

  1. Raising awareness and sharing on good practices
  2. Develop a code of conduct
  3. Check list for setting up national structures
  4. Research on research integrity
