Executive Summary

The ESF is pleased to invite its Member Organisations to propose new topics for Forward Looks. The aim of this Invitation is to solicit topics which, from the perspective of ESF Member Organisations, reflect the development of their top level strategic priorities in the next five to ten years range, and which would benefit from a Forward Look at the European level.

A Forward Look may be defined as an interactive process by which scientific challenges and opportunities in fields of basic science are explored and which aims to identify needs and opportunities for improved science policies for such fields at national and European level.

Forward Looks are driven by ESF’s Member Organisations and, by extension, the European research community.

In its general meetings the Governing Council will decide on the implementation of the proposed Forward Look topics, as assessed by the Science Advisory Board and taking into account the strategic needs of the Member Organisations. Although there is no strict submission deadline, a proposal, in the ideal situation of being fully developed, should be submitted to ESF not later than mid-January or mid-June each year to ensure consideration for the next scheduled Governing Council meeting.
