Burial In ‘other’ Places In The European Past

ESF Exploratory Workshop - SCH

Convened by: Nick Thorpe (UK), Andrew Chamberlain (UK)

Location: 10-12 April 2007, Winchester, United Kingdom

Keywords

Burial; natural places; marginality; conflict; sacrifice

Summary

The workshop will consider burials from the Mesolithic up to the medieval period in Europe which occur in places other than those ‘normal’ for the period, e.g. outside cemeteries and barrows. These occur in caves, wetlands, settlements, rivers, mines, at crossroads with metal hoards and metal-working debris and on coasts. It will bring together archaeologists and physical anthropologists from across Europe to discuss methods and patterns in the evidence.
