Convened by: Tom Battin (AT)
Location: 19-22 September 2007, Lunz Am See, Austria
Microbial biofilms; environmental science; ecosystem ecology; societal services; ecological economics
The vast majority of microorganisms are contained in surface-attached and matrix-enclosed bofilms in most aqueous systems. While detrimental biofilms have understandably received considerable attention from medical and industrial microbiology, beneficial biofilms have not. At the same time, a significant communication gap has developed between microbiologists and ecologists. BIOSERV will (i) revisit the current knowledge on beneficial (the Beauty) and detrimental (the Beast) biofilms, (ii) transfer knowledge between microbiology, ecology, environmental science and ecological economics, (iii) initiate research to value biofilm services, and (iv) evaluate possible research activities within the 7th Framework Program.
