The Relevance Of Mathematics Education

ESF Exploratory Workshop - PESC - SCSS

Convened by: Paul Andrews (UK), Paul F. Conway (IE), Markku Hannula (FI)

Location: 7-10 January 2008, Cambridge, United Kingdom

Keywords

mathematics education; teacher-beliefs; teacher-practices; mathematics-related beliefs; mathematics cognition

Summary

Recent research has shown that school students’ mathematical achievement is influenced by students’ beliefs about mathematics and its teaching, teachers’ beliefs about mathematics and its teaching, and the ways in which teachers initiate and sustain learning opportunities. However, little is known about either the interactions of these dimensions or their consistency across cultures. This workshop will allow experts in the different fields to develop a theoretical framework for future research.
