Modelling intelligent interaction - Logic in the Humanities, Social and Computational sciences (LogICCC)

CALL IS NOW CLOSED  ## CALL IS NOW CLOSED  ##  CALL IS NOW CLOSED

One of the most crucial and striking features of humans and their societies, is the phenomenon of intelligent interaction. Many disciplines from the humanities to the physical sciences hold separate pieces of the puzzle posed by this pervasive but also elusive phenomenon. The EUROCORES programme “LogICCC – Modelling Intelligent Interaction” aims at a deeper understanding of intelligent interaction by letting logic in its modern guise act as a catalyst and a ’match maker’ between these different disciplines. This will lead to a general framework for analyzing intelligent interaction - and the key notions which it naturally brings with it, namely, communication, cognition and computation.

To achieve this goal, researchers from a wide variety of disciplines are invited to team up. Some of these researchers may be logicians, others may not. But what all participants in LogICCC projects have in common is their interest in understanding interaction, pursued with the common language and models provided by logic in its modern, pluriform, and outward-looking guise. In this way, new ideas will flow symmetrically between many disciplines, enriching logic itself in the process.

In addition, the EUROCORES programme LogICCC is looking for a balance between fundamental theoretical advances and innovative applications of logical models in the thematic areas of interaction, communication, computation, and cognition.

Funding initiative in the field of Modelling Intelligent Interaction

Following agreement with funding organisations in Austria, Belgium, Croatia, Cyprus, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Israel, the Netherlands, Portugal, Romania, Spain, Sweden and Turkey, the European Science Foundation is launching a Call for Outline Proposals for Collaborative Research Projects (CRPs) to be undertaken within the EUROCORES Programme on Modelling intelligent interaction - Logic in the humanities, social and computational sciences (LogICCC).

This programme aims to support high quality multidisciplinary research and is expected to run for 3-4 years; it includes national research funding as well as support for networking and dissemination activities managed by the ESF*.

(*) Currently supported through a contract with the European Commission under the Sixth Framework Programme (EC contract n° ERAS-CT-2003-980409)

The deadline for online submission of LogICCC Outline Proposals was 11 May 2007, 12:00 PM (noon)

Eligibility

Proposals from individual researchers and research groups eligible for funding by the participating funding agencies will be accepted for consideration in the EUROCORES Programme LogICCC.

Applicants should contact their national funding agencies in order to verify their eligibility and to ensure compliance with the relevant agencies’ current granting rules and regulations. A list of all funding agencies participating in LogICCC - and their contact details - can be found here.

The participating funding agencies have indicated the maximum number of individual projects that they are able to fund. Please see the funding information (pdf) to the scientific community.

Most of the funding agencies participating in the EUROCORES Scheme have also provided information on their national requirements. General information can be found here. PLease note that this general file includes requirements of funding agencies that may not be participating in LogICCC.

Proposals must involve a minimum of 3 eligible Principal Investigators from 3 different countries participating in the programme.

Scientists or groups not seeking funding or not eligible to apply for funding from one of the participating funding agencies, can be associated with a proposal by contributing additional scientific value to the collaborative research project.  Their research must be fully self-supportive, but they are entitled to networking support currently provided by ESF. In the context of CRP eligibility, Associated Partners do not count towards the “three nation requirement”.

Application Procedure - Full Proposals

In response to the Call for Proposals, 34 Outline Proposals were submitted of which 33 were eligible. The LogICCC Review Panel convened on 7 and 8 June 2007 in Strasbourg to sift the 33 eligible Outline Proposals according to the assessment criteria. Successful applicants are invited to submit Full Proposals online.  Deadline for submitting Full Proposals: 10 SEPTEMBER 2007, 12:00 PM CET (noon).

Before preparing the application, applicants should

As part of the Proposal, applicants will be asked to provide the overall budget of the CRP (Table A), a specification of the budget per IP (Table B) and the Sum of the requested IP budgets per year (Table C).

The Project Leader will be responsible for correctly entering the data. Principal Investigators and Associate Partners are responsible for supplying the Project Leader with complete and correct data.

For further information, please see the Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ).

Note that the Collaborative Research Project as a whole, not its individual components, will be assessed.

Assessment criteria for Full Proposals

At the Full Proposal stage, the assessment will focus on the scientific quality of the research plan for a Collaborative Research Project.

  1. Scientific quality of the CRP and IP proposals
  2. Level of multidisciplinary integration within the CRP
  3. Qualification of the applicants (suitability for this CRP; international standing)
  4. Level of collaboration and integration between the IPs in the CRP
  5. Feasibility, incl. suitability of the methods selected
  6. European added value and relation to other projects (risk of double-funding and track record for collaboration).

The Assessment Form (PDF 318 KB) is available for consultation.

Programme Structure and Management

The programme will be overseen by a Management Committee formed by one representative of each of the participating funding organisations and the EUROCORES Programme Coordinator in the Cognitive Sciences.

An independent international Review Panel formed of leading experts in the field, with a mandate from the funding agencies, will oversee the scientific aspects of the programme.

ESF will support networking activities expected to facilitate communication between the different projects, leading to an effective exchange of information and dissemination of results.  To this aim, scientific workshops, conferences, symposia and training courses will be organised during the programme’s lifetime.  Web-based resources will also be developed to support the exchange of technical and scientific information and expertise, and to promote effective collaborations with other European researchers working in the field.

Networking and coordination of the EUROCORES Programmes are currently funded through the European Commission Sixth Framework Programme, under contract n° ERAS-CT-2003-980409

Additional information, such as the EUROCORES Glossary and the Frequently Asked Questions are also available on the EUROCORES Programmes Homepage.
