The ESF received 67 proposals in response to the 2009 Call for Theme proposals by the deadline of 29 May 2009.
The proposals are currently being processed and sent to referees for assessment.
EUROCORES Themes are "bottom-up" proposals for the creation of new collaborative research programmes dealing with broad and complex topics which are best addressed through multinational cooperation. Through its annual call for theme proposals, ESF solicits new ideas from the scientific community with a view to creating large-scale European Collaborative Research (EUROCORES) programmes in and across all scientific domains.

The Call for EUROCORES Themes, which is envisaged to be published annually, is currently closed. It is expected that the next call for themes will be launched around 1st March 2010.

From the Open Call for themes 2008, six EUROCORES themes were selected to be further developed into EUROCORES Programmes. Upon recommendation by the Science Advisory Board, calls for the following six EUROCORES programmes have been published in December 2008 - January 2009:
