Magellan Workshop Series is offering funding for a limited number of Short Visit Grants to attend workshops that address marine coring and/or drilling proposal development in 2007. Applicants may apply for grants to attend workshops organized by IMAGES, ICDP and the “IODP International Workshops” to be held in 2007 among others in the context of the Magellan Programme.
The IODP workshop “Large Igneous Provinces” will convene on July 21 – 26, 2007 in Coleraine, Northern Ireland.

The call is open for 2007 until all available funding has been awarded
1) Specifically for short visit grants to attend IODP-MI workshops the applicants should show proof of having been considered for funding but rejected for exceeding the IODP-MI 7:7:3 guidelines
2) All applicants have been unable to secure other sponsoring from their National Funding Agency or University to attend the workshops
3) All applicants must show evidence of the above and submit a budget according to the ESF financial guidelines
4) All successful applicants will submit a financial and short workshop report within 4 weeks following the completion of the workshop. The summary will be placed on the ESF web-site. The participants must acknowledge ESF in publications resulting from the grantee’s work in relation to the Short Visit Grant.
Priority will be given to applicants who come from countries that financially support the programme (Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Ireland, the Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Sweden and Switzerland)
Once the Magellan Programme Steering Committee has evaluated applications ESF will automatically notify grant applicants.

Short Visit Grant applications (PDF) must include the following information:
- A short description of the applicant’s research involvement in IODP science and proposed future work (about 250 words)
- A curriculum vitae of a maximum of two A4 pages

Short Visit Grants are reimbursed directly by ESF on a per diem basis of 85 EUR plus actual travel expenses up to a maximum of 500 EUR per person. Travel will be refunded on the basis of actual costs and on the basis of APEX type airfares or 2nd class train travel for shorter distances. Therefore all receipts must be submitted for reimbursement. The grants do not cover health insurance, taxes, or retirement scheme contributions.
Grantees will be expected to provide a written report at the end of their visit. Payment of the grant, including the reimbursement of travel costs, will be made after the short visit, subject to receipt of the scientific report, original travel tickets and signed host statement form(s), one month after the visit.
